Museum Bound

The exhibition Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes displays original drawings in an installation environment. This first major survey of the artist’s work accompanies the publication of the extensive full-color monograph. The exhibition, which opens April 14 and runs through August 12, 2012 at OMCA in Oakland, CA, is organized by guest curator Susan Miller and Senior Curator of Art René de Guzman, with design by Nicholas de Monchaux. The exhibition will travel to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL, The Cocoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus Ohio.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the many background drawings that Clowes has created for the installation environment:

We’ve also included a test sample of animation that Nicholas de Monchaux is working on for the exhibition:

Design Dept:

Daniel Clowes: “The only valuable class I took in art school was from a guy who taught display lettering which was literally like sign painting. Everybody else was like,  ‘Aww man, I can’t believe I have to take this cornball class,’ where I was front and center every week. Still to this day I use everything I learned in that class.”

Clowes created this font for the movie Art School Confidential
Various examples of Clowes’s handlettering.

Bonus:

Four unused proposals for the cover of “The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist.

We are fortunate to have worked with Jonathan Bennett, who designed every aspect of the book. He’s not only an exceptional designer but an accomplished cartoonist. Here’s an a comic he recently did for Spin magazine: Nevermind
Early on, Jonathan Bennett flew out to Oakland to work with us on the book. He stayed in the Clowes’ guest apartment/basement and left behind a comic depicting his experience one of those nights. I don’t think he sleeps.

The Chicago Years…

Here are some things from Clowes’s time in Chicago during the mid-1980s and early '90s:

This is an unpublished color version of the first page from the first "Lloyd Llewelleyn" story. Clowes sent the comic to Fantagraphics and, much to his surprise,
they gave him his own series.

An excerpt from Lloyd Llewelleyn no. 5 along with custom drawings that Clowes made to fulfill the few responses to the offer.
Two photos of Clowes in the early Eightball days.
A preliminary sketch for the cover of Eightball no. 7.

Joey Ramone talks about Clowes and I Don’t Want to Grow Up
& the Launch of the danielclowesdotcom youtube Channel

Daniel Clowes drew the art for the Ramones animated music video for their cover of Tom Waits's “I Don’t Want to Grow Up” in 1995. This clip, transferred from one of Dan's dusty old VHS tapes, features Joey Ramone talking with Jerry Bryant about his collaboration with Clowes. We’ve included some storyboards for the video.

With this post, we are officially launching the danielclowesdotcom youtube channel where we will post more archaic oddities that we found in an old box of VHS tapes in Dan’s basement.

Some Pages from Daniel Clowes's Sketchbooks

Alvin Buenaventura: The above images are previously unpublished sketchbook pages from The Daniel Clowes Archive. They are some of our favorite drawings that didn't make it into the 230-page book. It was a real treat to spend days looking through Clowes’s many sketchbooks, which are full of amazing stuff.”

14 days until "The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist"!

We’ll be counting down to the book's release with 14 daily posts of Clowes oddities on boingboing.net and danielclowes.com. Here’s the first:

¡Ay Dan Clowes! (Los Simpson en Español) y Correa de la Utilidad del Batman

Daniel Clowes, along with Art Spiegelman and Alan Moore, appeared on The Simpsons episode titled "Husbands and Knives," first broadcast on November 18, 2007. Clowes was asked to draw a version of Batman's utility belt, but it was too detailed for the show’s minimal style.

Two-Week Countdown to the Release of "The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist"!

Starting this Monday we begin our two-week countdown to the release of The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist. For each day leading up to its April 1st release (think advent calendar), we will post some items of interest and other oddities at danielclowes.com that were unearthed while working on this project. Our full access to the cartoonist’s archives provided an over-abundance of material (thank you Mr. Clowes!), so these daily posts will feature some of the never-before-seen gems that we couldn’t fit into the book’s 230 pages. They will also give you an idea of the volume’s diverse contents including: photos,  sketchbook pages and strips, childhood drawings, process art, unpublished work, illustrations, and so much more. Check back daily!
